How to get rid of a typhoon.

Hong Kong met office decides we cannot have a typhoon visiting Hong Kong and sets its force fields to deflect.

And amazingly the secret weapon seems to have worked....

And the accuracy of the predictions seem pretty spot on too.

Typhoon Signal 10 and Eagles

A real bumpy night of wind and rain.   Trees down all over the shop in the morning.   The tide was surging too.   Luckily Man Kok Tsui seemed to weather the storm and the beach remained intact.   Last time the beach was trashed and covered in debris.   I suppose this time the winds must have been from another direction.   5 in the afternoon and not much happening but by midnight it was a very different place.

When Nuch and I took the boat round to Man Kok Tsui to check the house we counted six or seven kites soaring over the headlands.   As we looked closer we noticed the birds seemed to keep diving down onto a slightly larger bird with broader, wider and fingered wings and a distinctly rounded tail.  The bigger bird seems to be about 25% bigger than the kites.  The kites seemed to line up and take turns to mob the bird, occasionally locking talons and tumbling over and over before letting go.    Too far away to properly ID I guess it was a stranger to the shores that had been blown off course by the typhoon winds that had swept up from the Philippines.

Typhoon Time

This one is obviously determined to find its way to Hong Kong. Look at the way it is lining itself up, it was happiliy heading for Vietnam and then decided to go North and then when it saw HK it turned West again.

It seems my amateur weather forecasting predcitions are coming true! Yesteray's tropical depression is now today's tropical storm Molave and if you follow the link above you will see it has its sights firmly towards Hong Kong and is timings its arrival for Sunday! Thanks.

Look What's Due to Spoil our Weekend

A baby typhoon in the making, still only a tropical depression and will not get a name unitl it grows into a typhoon but ......... It is forecast to sail right over the top of Hong Kong on Sunday. Quite often as a storm gets sucked between the Southern tip of Taiwan and the Northern tip of the Philippines (through the Luzon Straits) it will gather speed an grow into a typhoon. Let's see. It's really hot here today with a temperature of well over 33 degrees. This will heat up the land far more quickly than the sea, which will make the hot air rise and draw in cooler air from the sea - a sea breeze, which may also help to pull the depression towards land.

Typhoon Hagupit - A wet and wild night

This is the track of the latest typhoon to zoom past Hong Kong yesterday. Typhoon Hagupit was the third typhoon in the last two months to come our way. Pictures courtesy of the Hong Kong observatory. However unlike other countries who shall remain nameless, we all simply got on with it and did not turn it into international news. OK it did not directly hit Hong Kong but it did (as do most) come quite close. Close enough to close the stock exchange, all schools, banks and ferries and in fact send everyone home from work. No national guard call out though!

This one, on 23 Aug 08, typhoon Nuri was a direct hit and went to typhoon level 10.
And this one, Typhoon Kammuri, on 08 Aug 08 had so much fun it hit land ran down the cosat of China towards Vietnam causing chaos as it went and then turned around and came back on itself before eventually calming down.
